Sandbox Organizations

Updated this week

What is a Sandbox?

A sandbox organization is a secondary organization that is connected to your primary production organization.

  • The production organization is used to deploy content that is accessible to students.

    • This organization is connected with LTI, and the material is accessible by students.

  • The sandbox organization provides a separate environment where administrators and instructors can test and preview content without affecting the live student experience.

    • Sandbox organizations do not have access to student-facing LTI integrations, so content created or tested in the sandbox will not be visible to students.

Sandbox organizations are useful for:

  • Testing new courses or content

  • Previewing configuration changes

  • Experimenting with platform features before deploying them to production

Currently, you cannot move material from your sandbox into your production organization. Members also do not transfer over. Users will need to be added to the sandbox organization.

How to create a sandbox organization

You will need to be an Organization Manager in order to create a sandbox organization. Read more about user roles here.

1. Go to Settings > General.

2. Click “Create Sandbox Organization” at the bottom of the page

  • If you already have a sandbox, you will see a link to the sandbox instead.
